One of the best things about wakeboarding is that it’s an extreme sport that comes with a built-in safety measure: a helmet. Wearing a helmet can give you peace of mind knowing that you are taking precautions to protect yourself while wakeboarding.

There are a few different types of wakeboarding helmets, but they all have one thing in common: they protect your head from impact in case of a fall. While no one likes to think about falling, it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

Wearing a Helmet Can Prevent Concussions and other Serious Brain Injuries

The sport of wakeboarding might be one of the safest ways to get into and stay in the water, but new research shows that we aren’t all keeping the ones we love safe enough.

A University of Wisconsin-Madison-led study found that athletes participating in wakeboarding fell asleep or struggled to stay awake while wearing a wakeboarding helmet and a life jacket, similar to the kind required to get on a wakeboard.

Unlike other activities, such as skiing, which require helmets and clothing that help prevent brain injuries when athletes hit their heads and bodies on the snow or rocks.

The results of the study appear online in the journal Injury Prevention.

“A wakeboarder in the water should be wearing a wakeboarding helmet, to prevent injury, but there’s no evidence we’ve collected to know how well that happens,” says lead author Robert Seeberger, a UW-Madison associate professor of occupational and public health who serves as a doctorate researcher at the UW School of Medicine and Public Health.

Falls have been associated with increases in concussions and other concussion-related injuries. Brain injuries can lead to seizures or strokes, according to the National Brain Injury Association.

“Current safety recommendations are conflicting. Some recommend wearing a helmet and life jacket on wakeboarders, and some don’t. We think more safety studies, like ours, need to be done to get all the facts,” Seeberger says.

Co-author Dan Volken, an associate professor of sociology at the University of Missouri, says, “A wakeboard helmet would typically include a visor that would prevent the wearer from seeing if he or she falls off the wakeboard, but the life jacket could prevent injuries in the water if the wearer wakes up.”

UW-Madison undergraduate students in the UW-Madison Graduate School of Education and Human Development conducted two surveys of wakeboarders and found a large number of injuries. Students were aware of three separate fatalities in the past decade.

One survey asked the 125 participants about how often they fell and received a head injury. So wearing a wakeboarding helmet is very important for surf.

A Helmet Reduces the Risk of Facial Injuries

How to wear a helmet on a wakeboard:

Here’s the key: Always wear a helmet when riding the wakeboard. Here are a few tips for riding with a helmet:

A helmet can help reduce the risk of facial injury. By reducing the impact on the helmet in the initial impact, the brain is less likely to be jarred or bruised in the first place. For instance, helmet manufacturers say they reduce the risk of concussions by up to 90 percent.

Helmet manufacturers say they reduce the risk of facial injury by more than 70 percent. If you are not wearing a helmet, you are taking that risk to the extreme. The best way to reduce the risk of a facial injury is to reduce the impact of the wakeboard on your face.

Of course, that isn’t always practical. But you can reduce the impact on your head by reducing the amount of force from a wakeboard’s wake on the head. To reduce the impact, you can use different wakeboards, a wakeboard with a lower body ride, a wakeboard with a high ratio of ride time to wakeboard, or a wakeboard with a wakeboard ride to wakeboard ratio of 0.8 or lower. Also, avoid steering in a straight line. That helps reduce the force of the wake.

How to ride a wakeboard with a helmet:

It’s really easy. Once you’ve learned the basics of how to ride a wakeboard, simply put the helmet on. There are many companies that sell helmets to suit most needs. Most will come with instructions on how to wear the helmet.
